The older the house, the shorter the weld.
Choose a surname before a first name if you are building a family rather than a hero: the house explains the children better than the children explain the house. A Nightward raises different daughters than a Honeywell attempts to. When the grimoire deals you a surname, it is dealing you three generations of implied backstory at no extra charge.

How do I pick a fantasy last name that fits my character?
Work backwards from the family, not the hero: what did the house do, hold, or survive? A soldier from a farming line (Ashfield) tells a better story than a soldier from an obviously soldier line (Battleborn). The mismatch is the character.
Should fantasy surnames have meanings?
The good ones are meanings: nearly every real-world surname began as a place, trade, or trait. This chapter builds every name that way, and deals the meaning with it, so the name arrives with its own history.
Can I use these surnames with any first name?
Yes. The elements are deliberately culture-neutral common tongue, so they sit as comfortably after an elvish first name as a human one. Elves in this grimoire compound their own family names; everyone else borrows from this ledger.
